Sempervivum calcareum 'Grigg's Surprise' is a striking and unusual variety of the limestone-loving Sempervivum calcareum species, originating from the Alpine mountain ranges of Europe. It forms open, elegant rosettes with blue-green leaves dramatically tipped in deep maroon or chocolate brown, creating a beautiful two-toned effect that is quite unlike most other Sempervivums. The name calcareum refers to its natural preference for alkaline, calcium-rich soils, making it notably adaptable to limestone-based or alkaline garden conditions.

☀️ Sun	Full sun to partial shade. Best colouring and most compact growth in full sun.
⚠️ Toxicity	Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs.
💧 Watering	Very low. Every 2 to 3 weeks in summer, monthly or less in cooler months.
🌱 Fertilising	Rarely needed. A light feed in spring is optional.
📏 Mature Size	Rosettes 8 to 12cm wide. Spreads gradually via offsets.
🌿 Difficulty	Very easy.
🎨 Colours	Blue-green leaves with deep maroon or chocolate-tipped ends, creating a beautiful two-toned rosette.
🛡️ Disease Resistant	Excellent.
🏜️ Drought Tolerant	Excellent.
🔥 Heat Tolerant	Good.
🪨 Poor Soil	Excellent. Particularly well-suited to alkaline or limestone-based soils.
