Underwatering and Shriveling Leaves - Is Your Succulent Thirsty? - The Succulent Gift Co

While overwatering gets all the attention as the "#1 succulent killer," underwatering can be just as damaging. If your succulent's leaves are looking wrinkled, deflated, or like tiny accordions, your plant is crying out for a drink!

What Does Underwatering Look Like?

  • Leaves become wrinkled, puckered, or deflated
  • Lower leaves feel soft and squishy (but not rotten)
  • Leaves may curl inward or downward
  • The plant looks "deflated" overall
  • Leaves may drop off (but they're usually dry, not mushy)
  • Soil is bone dry and may pull away from pot edges

The Simple Solution

  1. Give it a thorough drink: Water slowly and deeply until water runs out the drainage holes.
  2. Wait and watch: Within 24-48 hours, the leaves should start plumping back up.
  3. Adjust your watering schedule: You may need to water more frequently than you thought.

How to Prevent Underwatering

  • Check soil moisture regularly with your finger
  • Watch for early warning signs before severe shriveling
  • Don't rely on a strict schedule, check the soil instead
  • In hot weather or low humidity, plants may need water more often
  • Remember: It's easier to save an underwatered succulent than an overwatered one

Quick Recovery Tip: Severely underwatered succulents may take several watering cycles to fully recover. Be patient and consistent!
